In the case of the cutter which has cutter components (10, 20) which operate with a relative movement with respect to one another and are driven by hydraulic means (30, 31), one cutter component (10) is arranged so as to be fixed and the other cutter component (20) is arranged so as to be movable about a common pivot point (1) of the cutter. Each cutter component (10, 20) has a plurality of blade bars with cutter blades (15) which form pairs of intersection points with their cutting edges. At the same time, the cutting edges of the cutter blades (15) of both cutter components (10, 20) each form a straight line and have equal lengths. The individual blade bars of the cutter components (10, 20) form in each case cutter openings between them, which openings permit the cutter components (10, 20) to engage in one another. The movable cutter component (20) is supported by means of a joint bearing (5) and a piston rod (31) against the hydraulic cylinder (30) which is swivellably suspended in a fixed counter bearing (3) inside the front half. By virtue of these measures, it is ensured that the cutter is not susceptible to blockages and is self-cleaning so that while maintaining the same performance the overall length of the cutter can be shortened. <IMAGE>
