A first partial air stream is cooled and a second partial air stream is moistened. Both partial air streams are conducted separately from one another located one above the other into the display compartment (17) of the show case, and part of the first partial air stream flows into the display compartment through the display base (12). The show case is particularly suitable for cheese owing to the moistening present. Serving for the moistening is a surface evaporator (20) which is arranged in a lying position slightly inclined to the horizontal. The water serving for the moistening runs through the evaporator in a counter-flow to the airflow by means of gravity. Fresh water, e.g. 30-60 l/h per 1.5 m of show case length is used for this purpose, said water not being used in a circuit, but flowing into the drainage system (6) downstream of the evaporator. The fresh water (44) is heated in the condenser (37) of the coolant circuit to an initial temperature (46) in the range of 40-50 DEG C. With this type of moistening, an inexpensive, preferably small show case with a length of for example 1.5 m can be provided. <IMAGE>
