PURPOSE:To improve the responsiveness, and to expand the focal distance variable range by enclosing liquid crystals having each different refractive index at least in one direction, in the surface orthogonal to an optical axis. CONSTITUTION:Liquid crystals 2, 3,...,7 are enclosed in each annular cell which has been pinched by parallel transparent plates 9, 10, in which transparent partition walls 2a, 3a, 4a,...,7a of a concentric circle shape are provided, its radial direction is partitioned annularly, and both sides orthogonal to these partition walls and transparent electrodes 9A, 10A are provided. As for the liquid crystals 2, 3,...,7, the respective refractive indexes n2, n3,...,n7 become larger in the inside of the radial direction, and becomes smaller toward the outside, namely, that of n2, n3,...,n7 is selected and used, and a liquid crystal lens 1 which functions as a convex lens is formed without thickening the concentrical center side. In accordance with a value of an applied voltage, the refractive indexes n2, n3,...,n7 of the liquid crystals 2, 3,...,7 in each cell can be made variable at the same time.
