In a process for the direct prodn. of iron, the redn. gas travels round a circuit in which the gas leaving the redn. furnace is cleaned; compressed in a blower; heated to high temp. in a recuperative or regenerative system; reduced in an electrically-heated carburator; and then returned to the redn. furnace. The carburator pref. uses graphite or carbon electrodes for supplying the electrical energy, no electrode carrying >3000 kW, and the surplus gas in the circuit is pref. used to heat the recuperator or regenerator. Up to 25% of the fixed carbon required in the carburator is pref. obtd. from gaseous- or liq.- fuels or heavy oil. The process is very economic. |
