A DC machine having thyristors for commutation has an electrical armature winding having a plurality of active conductors (3 and 4) which participate in the electromechanical energy conversion of the machine. Furthermore, a commutating device having a plurality of thyristors or comparable switching elements (1) is provided, in which switching elements the change from the non-conductive state to the conductive state is carried out by means of external control signals, but the opposite change can take place only when the conductor current is zero.
