A method for controlling the dwell angle of a spark-ignition internal combustion engine is proposed, in which an increment system (1, 2, 3) is connected to an ignition computer (4). The ignition computer (4) calculates opening angle and ignition angle of the internal combustion engine, according to which it controls an ignition output stage (5) which switches the current through an ignition coil (6). The primary current of the ignition coil (6) is detected via a current detection resistor (8) and compared with a comparison value by means of a comparator (9). The result of the comparison is reported to the ignition computer (4) for the purpose of controlling the dwell angle. <IMAGE>
