PURPOSE:To inspect easily and quickly a connected state of an encoder, and to always execute a stable position control by superposing a pilot signal on a position detecting signal of the encoder. CONSTITUTION:A pilot signal is supplied to an encoder 1 through a cable 5 from a control part 4, an output light of an LED 14 is modulated by the pilot signal, and encoder output signals PAS, PBS which have superposed the pilot signal on each position detecting signal are fed back to the control part 4 through a cable 2 from a photodetector 15. The control part 4 detects the pilot signal by detecting parts 42a, 42b, respectively, and by obtaining its AND from a gate 44, the normalness of a connected state of the encoder 1 and the cable 2 is decided. Also, each position detecting signal which is separated and regenerated by regenerating parts 41a, 41b is led into a processing circuit 43, a moving position of a system to be driven is detected, and a position control is executed.
