PURPOSE:To erase the 2nd recorded phase, to transform it into th 1st phase reversely and to re-write information by applying a heat history to a phase transformation type optical recording alloy formed on an insulating substrate by means of a current so as to give an information change and detecting the information volume by an optical characteristic detecting means. CONSTITUTION:Rollers 20-23 are installed in order to give a sufficient tensile force to a tape 1 stretched between two reels 100 and 101. Then recording probes 3 and 3' flow a current to the upper and lower surfaces of the tape and give heat energy necessary for the phase transformation to the optical recording alloy formed on the tape. The reflectance of the optical recording alloy 1 on the tape increases, for instance, in accordance with a given temperature profile, and accordingly it is detected as a voltage signal change by a read system composed of a beam spliter 6, an objective lens 5 and a photodiode 4. When erasing probes 31 and 31 need heat energy, a smaller heat energy than the recording probes 3 and 3' is given for a long time, whereby the optical recording alloy 1 is transformed into the 1st phase and the reflectance is dropped to erase information.
