The storage system uses a number of rectangular containers (14) fitted between vertical sidewalls (11,12) at adjustable heights in dependence on the type of items to be stored. One or more of these containers has a pivoted closure flap (17) with a height corresponding to the min. possible vertical spacing between the adjacent containers (14). Pref. the depth of each container (14) is greater than that of the sidewalls (11,12) between which it is fitted. The closure flap (17) pref. has a lip along its top edge with a width equal to the difference between the depth of the container (14) and that of the sidewalls (11,12).
