PURPOSE:To enable easy recognition of changes in the number of lines and the number of characters associated with a change in character size, by a method wherein the number of developed lines and the number of characters per one page are calculated from a conversion magnification of character size, a character pitch and a line pitch, and are displayed on an existing display device to show them to the operator. CONSTITUTION:When a paper size is designated in relation to a reference character font size, a reference character pitch and a reference line pitch, a reference number of characters (per one line) m0 and a reference number of lines (per one page) g0 are determined. For example, when the operator depresses a 'character size' key on a keyboard to input a magnification A, a new number of characters m=m0/A and a new number of lines g=g0/A are determined, and an input range of the number of lines (g) and the number of digit places (m) is displayed. In this case, for example, even when enlargement or reduction of characters is designated, the character size, the character pitch and the line pitch on the display screen are constantly fixed, and boundary lines on the paper are changed.
