PURPOSE:To discriminate the types of devices of an opposite party with addition of simple hardware by providing a discriminating means with minimum constitution to cope with the mode of various reception stations thereby coping with the type of the MODEM of the opposite party. CONSTITUTION:A communication network 3 is connected to a transmission station 1 via a transmission station MODEM4, a reception station 2 is connected to the communication system 3 via a reception station MODEM5 to constitute a full duplex system communication system. A signal reception detecting section 8 of the MODEM4 detects the start of response from the opposite station from the presence of a carrier and a timer 10 starts count. Further, a filter 9 detects the presence of a prescribed frequency signal and a mode discriminating section 11 discriminates the elapsed prescribed time T11. The result of discrimination is informed to a demodulation section 7, a modulation section 12, a signal generating section 13 and the timer 14. Then a different signal depending whether the MODEM of the opposite station belongs to the 1st group or the 2nd group is transmitted (16) and the processing corresponding to the mode of various reception devices is executed.
