PURPOSE:To produce PE without producing ethane by-product, by (co) polymerizing ethylene in the presence of a catalyst comprising a specified solid catalyst component and an organometallic compound. CONSTITUTION:A solid catalyst component is obtained by reacting a product obtained by reacting at least one Mg-containing reactant selected from among metallic Mg plus a hydroxy organic compound, an oxygen-containing organic compound of Mg, a Mg halide compound, and an organomagnesium compound with a reactant containing at least one Ti compound selected from among oxygen-containing organic compounds of transition metals and halogen- containing compounds of transition metals so that the product may contain a C-O-M bond (wherein M is Mg or a transition metal) with an aluminum halide compound, an (inter)halogen compound, etc. Ethylene is polymerized or copolymerized with an alpha-olefin at a temperature below the m.p. of the formed polymer in the presence of H2 and a Ziegler catalyst comprising said catalyst component and an organometallic compound of a metal of Group Ia, IIa, IIb, IIIb or IVb of the periodic table.
