A storage and retrieval system, particularly for automobiles, is a substantially vertically directed structure having a central elevator shaft and cage for hoisting automobiles to an assigned tier level for storage; each tier level having a left and a right stall for transfer of a pallet (60) containing the automobile from the elevator into the left or the right stall, and subsequently retrieved therefrom, by an automatic controller. Each of the plurality of tiers is a modular structure consisting of four square tube corner column sections (11, 12, 13, 14) and horizontal beams (25, 26, 27, 28) interconnecting the columns, with appropriate cross-bracing. The tier modules are stackable one on top of another at the vertical columns by means of a unique corner connector (41, 42) at each corner of the module frame, and by means of a thrust bearing plate (50) covering the upper end of each lower module column, allowing one module to sit flat on the end of the lower columns with an evenly distributed load. The columns are retained by bolts through the corner connector angle irons and vertical columns, thus retaining one module on top of another. The tier modules are stacked concentrically with the elevator shaft which services all tier modules. |
