PURPOSE:To reduce man power, to reduce the cost of an encoder, to stabilize an output and to improve characteristics by fixing a holder to an encoder case across a spacer and adjusting the gap between a magneto-resistance element and a magnetic drum. CONSTITUTION:The magnetic drum 11 is fitted onto the rotating shaft 13 of a motor 12 and the magneto-resistance element 14 faces it while a specific gap is left. The holder 15 to which the magneto-resistance element 14 is fitted is fixed temporarily while plural spacers 24 are interposed between the encoder case 21 and holder 15 when the gap (g) between the magnetic drum 11 and magneto-resistance element 14 becomes 0. In this state, one spacer 24 of optional thickness is further added for fixation, and then the magnetic drum 11 and magneto-resistance element 14 have the gap (g) corresponding to the thickness (t) of the spacer 24. The thickness of the spacer is so selected according to the output of the magneto-resistance element 14 so that a proper output curve is obtained.
