PURPOSE:To provide an antitumor agent containing a salicylic acid derivative as an active component. CONSTITUTION:The objective antitumor agent contains 0.01-100wt%, preferably 0.05-80wt% compound of formula I[R1 is group of formula II, formula III, -O-N(CH3)3-(CH2)2OH, OCH3 or NH2; R2 is COCH3, H or C2H5] as an active component. The compound of formula I is effective to decrease the number of tumor cells and suppress the proliferation of tumor of animal or man. It can be administered orally in the form of powder, granule, buffering tablet, sugar-coated tablet, capsule, liquid, etc., or parenteraly in the form of injection sealed in ampule, bottle, etc. or suppository or ointment. Dose: 0.1-1,000mg/kg, preferably 0.5-500mg/kg daily, optionally in 2-4 divided doses.
