PURPOSE:To reduce the bending deformation of a crystal by incorporating specified carbon black into a silicon source material as a carbonious material, and increasing the aspect ratio and uniformity of the formed whisker. CONSTITUTION:Carbon black to be mixed as the carbonious material has 150-500m<2>/g nitrogen adsorption specific surface and 120-200ml/100g DBP oil absorption, and the tinting strength (%) is regulated to a value not exceeding a tinting strength-related value calculated from the equation [0.3496X(nitrogen adsorption specific surface)-0.2143X(DBP oil absorption)+101.87). The carbon black having the above-mentioned characteristics is mixed in a silicon source material contg. SiO2 such as quartz sand, quartzite, and silica gel, and the mixture is kept under a nonoxidizing atmosphere at 1,300-1,800 deg.C for at least 20min to form a whisker.
