A thermocouple junction is made by tightly compressing a sintered powdered metal sleeve about a pair of dissimilar wires. The sleeve may be coated with gold, a rare metal or a resin, or with aluminium which is oxidized in situ. With an iron-constantan thermocouple the sleeve may be compacted under high-pressure from 50% powdered iron, 27 1/2 % copper, and 22 1/2 % nickel into a green form which is then sintered. Noble metals may be added to replace the nickel or copper. The completed sleeve is slipped over the thermocouple wire and compressed about them. |
