PURPOSE:To detect the head and rear edge of a medium by providing a detector to detect a medium between a printing position and a feed roller. CONSTITUTION:A groove 1a is provided in a portion other than a printing area 33 in the axial direction of a platen 1. A medium detection sensor 32 is directly arranged on a printer control substrate 8. If a continuous printing medium is inserted, it is loosely fitted to the groove 1a of the platen 1 and the head 30a of a medium detection lever which already touches the bottom rises upto the surface of the platen 1. The rear edge 30d of the medium detection lever is separated from the medium detection sensor 32 and a printer is ready to start printing operation at any moment. Next, a continuous printing medium is fed. If the end of the medium passes the head of the medium detection lever, this lever turns by its own weight at a rotational fulcrum point 30' and the head 30a of the medium detection lever abuts against the bottom of the groove 1 in the platen. At the same time, the rear edge 30b of the medium detection lever cuts across the medium detection sensor 32 arranged on the printer control substrate 8 and the printer discontinues printing operation immediately. |
