The invention relates to an extraction apparatus which is preferably intended for working hard coal seams. The extraction apparatus has an extraction machine which can be moved along a shiftable conveyor at the working face and which is at the same time equipped with breaker wheels which are rotatable about upright axes, penetrate into the working face under the applied pressure of the advancing cylinders, and during the travelling movement of the extraction machine perform a rotary movement during which the coal is released from the bond by breaking and wedging action. The breaker wheels are mounted on the body of the extraction machine in such a way as to be offset in the direction of movement of the extraction machine and in addition are arranged vertically offset from one another so that they first of all make a cut which is then widened to the desired height of the seam.
