A fiber optic amplitude modulator couples light between two orthogonal polarization modes of a birefringent fiber (200, 230, 250, 270, 304). Dynamic coupling is caused by applying synchronized acoustic surface waves to the birefringent fiber (200, 230, 250, 270, 304) in a direction normal to the fiber axis. A static biasing force (F) is applied across the fiber (200, 230, 250, 270, 304) to statically couple approximately 50% of the light input to one polarization mode into the other polarization mode. The additional force caused by the acoustic waves (205, 275A, 275B, 275C, 302) causes the fraction of coupled power to vary about the coupling caused by the static force (F).
|
