The valve actuating mechanism (5) contacts distinct cam profiles along the cam length. This allows some portion of the unburned gases to be expelled during a certain initial part of the compression stroke. A recirculation valve (4) has an opening period which controls the extent of the compression stroke during which the fresh gas is passed from the cylinder. A tube (8) conducts the gas to the intake tube to allow recovery in a new intake stroke. The actuating mechanism includes a rocker arm with freedom for a controlled longitudinal movement, to change the effective cam profile and vary the compression ratios.
