1,132,395. Monochromators. BECKMAN INSTRUMENTS Inc. April 6, 1966 [April 29, 1965(2)], No.15245/66. Heading G2J. A monochromator for passing selected wavelengths, comprises an interference filter, a variable slit-defining means positioned adjacent the filter and displaceable relative thereto, and means for varying the opening of the slit-defining means as a function of wavelength transmitted by the sector of the filter bounded by the slit-defining means. As shown in Fig. 1, an annular interference filter is divided into four sectors 13-16 and is mounted coaxially on a rotatable support wheel 11. The slit-defining means comprises a pair of jaws 24, 25 carried at the ends of a U- shaped spring 27 which is anchored between the shaft 18 of the wheel and a guide block 28. An actuator 30 having two extending arms 33, 34 is slidably mounted in the guide block 28 and urged upwards (as shown in Fig.1) by a spring 44. The free ends of the arms 33, 34 are bifurcated and engage the jaws 24, 25 respectively so that sliding movement of the actuator 30 moves the jaws 24, 25 towards or away from each other. Downward movement of the actuator against the action of the spring 44 is effected by a cam 39 carried by the wheel 11 and engaging a pin 42 on the actuator, this pin 42 also serving to anchor the spring 44. The filter sectors each have a wavelength transmission characteristic which is a linear function of the angular position of the filter. A second embodiment Fig. 5 (not shown) is fully disclosed in Specification 1,132, 394. |
