A fiber optical sensor for detecting a change in a physical quantity which comprises a body of a solid, and substantially optically transparent bonding material, the bonding material determining the mechanical properties of said body. At least 1% by weight of atomically localized liminescent centers are included as a solution in the bonding material, these centers substantially determining the luminescent properties of said body.
