O-(2,6-Dichloroanilino)phenyl acetic acid is made by (a) reaction of 2,6-dichloroaniline with o-methoxymethyl iodobenzene in presence of a catalyst, at 100 deg.C with agitation; (b) crystallisation of the o-(2,6-dichloroanilino) methoxymethyl benzene and reaction with HI at 100 deg.C max.; (c) reaction with KCN in aq. alcoholic medium to form o-(2,6-dichloroanilino) phenyl acetonitrile; and (d) hydrolysis with aq. sulphuric acid to obtain the required prod., which is recrystallised from ether-petroleum ether.
