A rod guide for a continuous cigarette rod cutting device of the type in which a cutting tube 9 is supported on the two sides of a cutting point by means of elongated spring members 4, 5 fastened to the cutting tube 9 and to support means 8 to allow for movement of the cutting tube 9 in the direction of the rod, is characterised in that the spring members 4, 5 are so arranged that orthogonal projections thereof in a plane perpendicular to the direction of the rod diverge in the direction towards the support means 8. As shown, the projections of the spring members 4, 5 diverge by an angle 7 of 180‹. This results in the substantial elimination of the latteral displacement of the reciprocated cutting tube 9 that would occur if the tube 9 were supported by two substantially parallel springs from the same side, and its replacement by a swing movement about the cutting point. The tube 9 consists of two parts 11, 12 comprising two cylindrical guide members 15, 16, approximately equal to a cigarette diameter in length, and tapered end regions 49, 50, the angles of taper 18, 17 being at least equal to the angle of swing of the cutting tube 9, e.g. 1‹. The springs 4, 5, which comprise spring packets of resin bonded glass fibre blades, are stressed one towards the other by oblique fastening to the support 8 by an angle equal to the angle of swing of the tube 9. Reciprocation of the support 8 is effected by a crank drive 19. Since the tube is slightly displaced on the support 8, Fig. 2, a small component of latteral displacement remains, but this is eliminated with an in-line method of mounting, (Figs. 5, 6 not shown). In another embodiment, the divergence angle is 120‹ which results in a considerable reduction, but not complete elimination of the latteral displacement of the reciprocating tube 9. |
