PURPOSE:To yield a red phosphorus flame retardant excellent in insulating characteristics, etc., by incorporating a water slurry of red phosphorus with a compd. forming a metallic hydroxide be hydrolysis, depositing the metallic hydroxide on the surface of red phosphorus particles and then washing with water. CONSTITUTION:Red phosphorus is pulverized so that a particle size of 100mum or below and an average particle size of 5-30mum are attained and dispersed in water to form a slurry. Then, a compd. forming a metallic hydroxide by hydrolysis (e.g., aluminum sulfate) is added to the water slurry to form the metallic hydroxide (e.g., aluminum hydroxide) in neutral or acidic regions, and the hydroxide is deposited on the surface of the red phosphorus particles, cover ing them. By washing the deposited product until an electric conductivity of washing mother liquor of 50muOMEGA/cm or below at room temp. is attained, the intended red phosphorus flame retardant having the amt. of Na dissolved of 5ppm or below when boiled for 15min is yielded.
