The walls 1, 3 of a vacuum insulated container 4 for a cryogenic liquid refrigerant, e.g. for the super conductive coil of a transformer, are spaced by members 12 having teeth 13, some of the teeth 13 only contacting the walls of the container when they approach, e.g. in an accident. The spacers 12 are formed of a laminated insulating material with the fibres parallel to the bearing stress exerted on the chamber walls in case of an accident. The spacers 12 are spaced over the length of the container, the upper and lower spacers having teeth in permanent contact with the wall intermediate spacers 12 having teeth spaced slightly from the wall 1, Fig. 5. The teeth out of contact with the wall are metallized, and only one tenth of the teeth are in permanent contact with the wall. The arrangement enables a transformer to resist the implosion forces caused by short circuits without the seals of the vacuum insulating chamber being broken. |
