PURPOSE:To detect the damage on a cutting tool simply and quantitatively in high accuracy by allowing acoustic emission signal to be detected in each time when the alumina which covers in plural layers the cutting tool is damaged. CONSTITUTION:If a tool is covered with Al2O3 in two layers or more, acoustic emission (AE) signal is detected at each time when Al2O3 is damaged, so the state of damage on the tool can be determined through the alternation of the AE signal. Cutting is carried-out by using the tool for which theickness of Al2O3 layer and the number of layers are determined beforehand, and the number and the magnitude of peaks are observed as cutting proceeds, and each AE signal ion this data and in the actual cutting, is compared, and therefore, the state of procedure of the damage during cutting is determined quantitatively with the lapse of cutting time. Therefore, the detrioration of surface characteristics, accuracy, and dimension of a work to be cut due to damage on the tool can be prevented by generating alarm signal or replacing tools at the time point when peak is generated. |
