Apparatus for guiding an operator held tool, e.g. for welding, grinding, soldering, burring or deburring, comprises a work-holder, a stationary guide, and means driven along the guide and adapted to be engaged by a hand holding the tool to feed and guide the tool along the required path. A pair of opposed channel sectioned members W to be welded together by two longitudinal welds are supported on a shaped bar (123, Fig. 3, not shown). The sides of the members W are gripped between the fixed and pivoted jaws (125, 129) of hydraulic clamping devices 31, 32, 33, 35 and hydraulic clamps 43, 44, 45 engage the upper face of the work W. Hydraulically actuated members 99, 110 engage in the ends of the work W and a pin 159 locates in apertures in the work W. A chain 63 is driven by a motor M and variable speed drive, and the upper length of the chain runs through a slotted tubular guide 55. Projections 73 attached to the chain and projecting through the slot in the guide 55 are adapted to engage and guide the hand of an operator holding a welding gun (T) to move the welding gun at the correct speed along the required path. A similar guiding arrangement is provided on the opposite side of the workholder so thattwo operators may weld the opposed seams at the same time. |
