A high pressure apparatus for example for diamond synthesis comprises opposing main anvils 1, 2 mounted on platens 3, 4; driven anvils 11, 12 . . . movable in a common plane in directions perpendicular to that of the main anvils; compression means to advance each of the driven anvils forward in response to the movement of the platens and each comprising a pair of compression members 28, 29, one of which is rotatably connected to one of the platens and one of the driven anvils, and the other of which is rotatably connected to the other platen and the same driven anvil; and electrically conducting rings 7, 8 which serve to heat object M through the binding blocks 5, 6 and steel rings 40. The driven anvils move through a guide ring 19 which may have guiding grooves (77) to receive projections (74) on the anvils (Fig. 9 not shown). In the embodiment of Fig. 3 (not shown) the compression members are constructed in duplicate and the guide ring is omitted. In the embodiment of Figs. 4, 5 and 6, the platens, compression members (56) and the pad carriages (54) on to which the driven anvils are secured through binding blocks are formed with concave surfaces to receive cylindrical pillow members (57), and toggle joints are provided to connect the platens with the driven anvils. Compression springs (68) serve to retract the driven anvils. |
