PURPOSE:Esterase is allowed to act on dl-cyclopentenone ester to effect asymmetric hydrolysis to enable easy production of the title compound which is used an an intermediate of agricultural chemicals or of prostaglandin derivatives. CONSTITUTION:Esterase is allowed to act on a dl-cyclopentenone ester of formula I [R' is halogen-substituted or unsubstituted alkyl, alkenyl] such as dl-4- acetoxy-5, 5-dimethyl-2-cyclopentenone to effect asymmetric hydrolysis to give the objective compound of formula II [R is H, R'CO-; * is asymmetric carbon).
