PURPOSE:An aromatic polyester which can be melt-molded at about 400 deg.C or below and give a molding of small anisotropy and good mechanical properties, comprising specified structural units. CONSTITUTION:A polyester (of an intrinsic viscosity of about 0.4-20) consisting mainly of structural units (I) comprising a unit of formula I and a unit of formula II [e.g., unit derived from phenylhydroquinone and a nucleus-substituted 1,2-bis(phenoxy)ethane-4,4'-dicarboxylic acid] and/or structural units (II) comprising a unit of formula III and a unit of formula II (e.g., unit derived from 2,7- dihydroxynaphthalene and said dicarboxylic acid). In the above formulas, X and Y are groups of at least one combination selected from among X=Y=Cl, X=Y=Br, X=Cl and Y=H, X=Br and Y=H, and X=OCH3 and Y=H. In units I and II, the number of moles of units of formula I + units of formula III is substantially equal to the number of moles of units of formula II.
