PURPOSE:To increase the hydrophilicity of the surface of vulcanized rubber without increasing the swellability thereof, by blending a sulfonic acid anionic surfactant and a nonionic surfactant with a rubbery polymer. CONSTITUTION:0.5-5pts.wt. sulfonic acid anionic surfactant and 1-10pts.wt. nonionic surfactant are incorporated in 100pts.wt. rubbery polymer. When the quantity of the sulfonic acid anionic surfactant is less than 0.5pts.wt., an effect of imparting hydrophilicity can not be obtained, while when the quantity exceeds 5pts.wt., the bleeding of the surfactant toward the surface of vulcanizate is remarkable, which is nonpreferable for practical application. When the quantity of the nonionic surfactant is less than 1pt.wt., an effect of imparting hydrophilicity is insufficient, while when the quantity exceeds 10pts.wt., the bleeding of the surfactant toward the surface of the vulcanizate is remarkable, which is unpreferable for practical application. The addition of the surfactants to the polymer can be carried out by a dry process wherein they are dry-blended with the polymer on a roller on a wet process wherein they are added to an emulsion of the latex of said polymer.
