摘要 The disclosure describes an apparatus for the electrophoresis in series of multiple agarose slab gels. It comprises a train of at least three elongated box-like containers (1, 2, ... 12) such as twelve, which are set consecutively in substantially parallel fashion at a variable distance from one another, each container to contain a running buffer (21, 22, 23, 24). The first and last containers (1, 12) are each provided with an electrode (17, 19) for connection to a single suitable power supply. A plurality of horizontal plates (31, 33), each to contain a slab gel (35), are disposed in bridging fashion over adjacent spaced apart containers, to cover gaps between all the containers (1,2,... 12). The apparatus comprises first means (39) capable of establishing capillary contact between one end of the slab gel (35) and the running buffer which is present in a given container; and second means (39) capable of establishing capillary contact between the other end of the slab gel (35) and the running buffer which is present in the next container. A method for the separation of components from a mixture of molecules of mixed molecular weights, wherein a solution of said molecules is added to wells (37) formed in a horizontal slab gel (35) and the gel is thereafter treated by the above electrophoresis to produce localized bands each being characteristic of a specific molecular weight, is also disclosed.
