A winding machine with a spooling device which has a guide, movable to and fro along the winding axis according to the pitch of a helical drive, for the strand to be wound up, the guide being reversible in its direction of movement in each case in two end positions, the spacing of which corresponds approximately to the winding width minus the strand thickness, is to be designed in such a way that the production of a uniform and particularly space-saving package is possible with it, even though strands of non-uniform cross-section are being wound. At the same time, the winding machine is to be designed so that different strands of non-uniform cross-section can be wound with it after a corresponding adjustment of the machine. For this purpose, according to the invention, the pitches of the drive of the guide can be adjusted independently of one another for its forward and return movement respectively, and the guide can be stopped at its reversal points, the dwell time at the reversal point being respectively adjustable separately.
