PURPOSE:To attain the stable tracking control by keeping a fixed level for the amplitude of a reproduction pilot signal even in modes of different tape speeds and furthermore controlling the amplification degree of a tracking error signal in order to improve the tracking control accuracy and also to keep the fixed loop gain of a servo system. CONSTITUTION:A capstan motor 20 is controlled by a capstan motor controller 23 so as to be set at a prescribed revolving speed. While the signals reproduced from a tape 1 via video heads 2 and 3 are sent to an amplifier 30 via a rotary transformer 29 and amplified. A reproduction signal RF is sent to a video signal reproducing circuit 31 and at the same time the video signals of high bands are deleted. Then a pilot signal PL is sent to a tracking error signal detecting circuit 18 via a preamplifier 4. The circuit 18 produces a tracking error signal ET and delivers an error signal EG via an LPF15 and an amplifier 16 to the controller 23. Thus the driving phase of the tape 1 is controlled according to the signal ET. Then the tracking control is carried out so that both heads 2 and 3 have correct scans over video tracks.
