A dentifrice composition effective to weaken the structure of dental plaque to permit easier removal comprises an effective amount of a water-soluble salt of alginic acid to produce a substantial reduction in the amount of dental plaque on teeth of a user, and a carrier acceptable for use in the oral cavity, said dentifrice being substantially devoid of a source of calcium ions.
