PURPOSE:To accomplish the titled control by carrying out the polymerization through stepwise addition of the dicarboxylic acid chloride during said chloride and aromatic diamine are brought to reaction to effect regulation of the polymerization liquid viscosity irrespective of impurities and/or reaction conditions. CONSTITUTION:In the production of an aromatic polyamide by the reaction, in a non-protonic amide solvent, between aromatic dicarboxylic acid chloride (a moles) and aromatic diamine (b moles), given a/b=m, a reaction is carried out under such a condition as to be 0.9>m>1 followed by stepwise addition of the dicarboxylic acid chloride to the system, in the form of powder, molten liquid, or solution prepared by dissolving, at <=0 deg.C, said chloride in the solvent used in the polymerization, to proceed with the polymerization. The dicarboxylic acid chloride to be added stepwise, is pref. in the form of solution prepared by dissolving at <=-10 deg.C.
