PURPOSE:To produce an optical fiber having extremely small eccentricity of a core at a high yield by providing a jacket layer consisting of a glass material having the m.p. lower than the m.p. of a material of a photoconductor on the outside of a photoconductor consisting essentially of quartz glass in tight contact therewith. CONSTITUTION:The core 11 is disposed eccentrically in a clad 12 and the jacket 15 surrounds the core. The photoconductor thereof consists essentially of quartz glass and the center of the core 11 shifts considerably from the center of the jacket 15. The low melting glass jacket layer 20 is disposed on the outside of the photoconductor constituted in such a manner in tight contact therewith. The material of the photoconductor is used for the layer 20 and is formed while the thickness deviation of the layer 20 is adjusted by measuring the eccentricity of the spun photoconductor. More specifically, the layer 20 is formed with the thickness deviation so as to correct the deviation thereof and the wall thickness thereof is so adjusted that the center of the outside periphery of the layer 20 and the center of the core are matched approximately thoroughly. |
