PURPOSE:To prevent mis-reading of na original requiring front/rear side identification and to improve the picture processing efficiency by providing a placing direction index designating a placing direction of the original so that the top and bottom directions of the original are made orthogonal in the main scanning direction of an optical system. CONSTITUTION:The original 31 is scanned optically in the main scanning direction X and then scanned in the sub-scanning direction Y sequentially in response to scanning line numbers A, B-N. The light from the original 31 is formed on a linear photoelectric converting element 16 via a lens 15 at each line, converted into an electric signal at the element 16 and read by a drive circuit 32. An original platen 41 is provided, on which the original 31 is placed in scanning the original 31. Then the operator matches the top direction of the original 31 with a nameplate 42 put on the original platen 41 so that the top and bottom directions of the original 31 is made always orthogonal in the main scanning direction X of the original 31. Thus, the sub scanning direction Y is directed from the top to the bottom of the original 31 and information of the original is stored sequentially to the disc.
