PURPOSE:To obtain an extended character with increased character height without increasing the storage capacity of a character generator by scanning each scanning data read sequentially from the character generator continuously for plural numbers when an extension command is inputted. CONSTITUTION:Each scanning data read sequentially from the character is scanned for plural numbers continuously. For example, when an extension multiple various R is increased by 1 and it is confirmed that the extended multiple variable R after increase does not exceed a predetermined specified multiple RE, the scanning data of the same S scanning order is read from a line data buffer RA2 and the photosensitive lane is scanned. When the variable R exceeds the RE, the scanning variable S is increased by 1, the next scanning data is read from the line data buffer RA2 and the photosensitive plane is scanned. Even when the scanning data constituting a character pattern stored in the character generator 23 is one kind, it is possible to obtain two kinds of character images of a conventional character and an extended character having a double height.
