PURPOSE:To prevent the drivability of the engine from being deteriorated by delaying for a predetermined time the transmission of an engagement instruction signal to a supercharge control clutch when an engine load is more than a predetermined value at the time of detecting the shift of the speed changer to a kick-down condition. CONSTITUTION:A mechanical type supercharger 1 is intermittently controlled with respect to the rotary shaft 2A of the engine 2 by a supercharge control clutch 3, and said clutch 3 is engaged or disengaged based on an instruction signal emitted from supercharger operating means 4 in accordance with the engine driving condition. The supercharger 1 of the type described above comprises kick-down detecting means 6 for detecting the kick-down of a speed changer 5 to the operational zone of the lockup clutch and engine load detection means 7. At the time of detecting the shift of the speed changer 5 to the kick-down condition, when the engine load is more than a predetermined value, the transmission of the engagement instruction signal from the supercharger operating means 4 to the clutch 3 is delayed by delay means 8 so that the engagement of the clutch 3 is formed in synchronism with the reengagement of the lockup clutch.
