PURPOSE:To prevent excessive feeding speed by giving a resistive force to the scanning at scanning start in a reader scanning manually a picture read face. CONSTITUTION:When the operator scans manually the read face an original is guided by guide rollers 12a, 12b and auxiliary guide rollers 16a, 16b without being tilted in the scanning direction and the turning speed of the guide rollers 12a, 12b is delivered increasing to a damper 18 via gears 15a, 17. Then the hand of the operator receives a resistive force at the start of scanning, the feeding speed is accelerated gradually and the original is scanned in a speed produced with a balance between the force from the operator and the resistive force. Thus, excess of feeding speed is prevented from being over the reading capability of a read sensor.
