1,262,400. Evaporators, multiple-effect type; desalination of water. UNITED STATES ATOMIC ENERGY COMMISSION. 19 March, 1970 [8 April, 1969], No. 13211/70. Heading B1B. In a multiple-effect evaporator wherein each effect has vertical tubes 5, 5' .. within which the liquid to be evaporated, e.g. seawater, is boiled, liquid flows from each effect to the next through sump connector pipes 17, 17' .., and is then raised to the upper ends of the corresponding heating tubes by pumps 15, U- shaped ducts 29, 29'.. are provided, between the vapour chambers 7, 7' .. of adjacent effects, for accommodating liquid-seals which normally maintain predetermined maximum pressure-differentials between the effects. Preheated seawater is supplied to the tubes of the first effect by pump 13. The tubes of effect 1 are heated by steam from boiler 19. The tubes of effect 2 are heated by the vapours evolved from the seawater in effect 1; and the tubes of effect 3 are heated by the vapours evolved from the seawater in effect 2. The vapour-condensate, i.e. desalinated water, collected in troughs 21', 21" .. is withdrawn from the evaporator as product. If pump 15 of effect 2 fails, the pressure in chamber 7 increases the water-column will blow out of duct 29' and the vapour generated in effect 1 will flow into chamber 7' and condense in effect 3. Thus the evaporator will remain in operation while the defective pump is replaced. |
