A device for joining marginally overlapping strips 16 of a self-adherent material, e.g. rubberized fabric, comprises a pivotable flap 4 having a porous surface 12 to which suction can be applied to hold a cut-off strip 3 at the output of a measuring beam 1 having cutting and clamping means, conveyer belt 9 on which the strips are deposited, and means to press the overlapped strips 16 into close contact, the pivotal axis of the flap 4 and the belt 9 being parallel to the cut edge of the strip 3. As shown, the cut-off strip 3 remains adhering to the uncut fabric 2 and hangs in front of the flap 4 with the cut line 5 at the top thereof. When the clamp closes before the next cutting operation, pistons 6 are moved forwards to open flaps 7 so that a space 8 beneath the belt 9 is connected to the hollow interior 10 of the flap 4 so that suction, which is constantly maintained under the perforated belt 9 by fans 11, is applied to the flap interior 10. The flaps 7 bear on the flap 4 which is pivoted forward about an axis 13 parallel to the strip 3 which is then peeled off by a bar 14 and deposited on the stationary belt 9 so that one edge thereof overlaps slightly the trailing edge of a preceding strip 16. When the piston stroke is completed, the flaps 7 close and the strip 3 is freed from the flap 4 and sticks to the belt 9. The piston 6 is reversed so that the flap 4 returns upwards and, simultaneously, the belt 9 is moved forward an increment. A roller 17 applies pressure to effect joining of the strips. To precisely determine the overlap, an accurate braking device 18 for the belt 9 is provided and is controlled by each strip by switches 19 on a slide 20. |
