The invention relates to a device for measuring audience rating. This device comprises a record detector circuit PC1,1,2,3,4 and a play-back detector circuit PC2,5,6,7,8 which respectively detect frequency-modulated video signals coming from record circuits REC and from play-back circuits PLY of a video recorder VTR and convert them into direct currents, a supply detector circuit CT1,CT2,9,11,10,12 which detects the plugging in and unplugging of the supply to the video recorder and to a television set TV, and a circuit 13 for detecting the operating condition of the video recorder and determining whether this condition corresponds to one of the four modes constituted by the unplugged mode 10, the monitor mode 13, the play-back mode 8 and the record mode 4.
