Prodn. of corrosion inhibiting particles by ion exchange

A process for prodn. of corrosion inhibiting particles is claimed comprising binding corrosion inhibiting anions (I) to particles of an inorganic oxide by ion-exchange to form anion-exchanged particles, the anions of which are releasable by further ion-exchange. - The process is characterised in that inorganic oxide particles having surface OH gps. are contacted with an acidic soln. contg. labile anions (II) at a pH sufficiently below 7 for the protons of the OH gps. to be replaced by (II). These particles are then contacted with a soln. contg. (I), pref. at a pH of less than 10, so that (II) are replaced by (I). (II) are anions of water-soluble acidic cpds. which have a lower affinity for the oxide surface than (I) and which form a soluble salt with the cation of the cpd. providing (I). The particles so obtd. and a protective coating contg. them are also claimed.
