In order to avoid regenerating agent being used in excess in a process for regenerating, for example, a water-softening vertical exchanger column (34) with flow from the top downwards, by regenerating agent flowing in the opposite direction, it is proposed to use an amount of agent which is independent of exhaustion and amount of water and is so adjusted that the upper section of the column is at most approximately regenerated. In order, in particular, to ensure that regeneration of a resin-containing hardness sensor (38) in the column (34) is always complete in such a method, it is proposed to use, to initate the regeneration, a sensor (38) disposed at the bottom of the column (34) and having a liquid outlet underneath its inlet and above the lower interface (36) of the column (34). In order to initiate an emergency regeneration in an apparatus for regenerating the column (34) as part of a water-softening installation having a container (22) containing the column (34) and an embedded vertical pipeline (24) and having a hardness sensor (38 and 42) inside and outside the column (34) if an operating sensor (42) fails as hardness sensor or parts (16) downstream of the apparatus fail, it is proposed to dispose a hardness sensor as safety sensor (38) at the bottom (36) of the column (34). <IMAGE>
