The termonomer preferably has the formula wherein A is a group containing at least one ring bridged by an endomethylene group; each of R 1 -R 4 , which can be the same or different, is hydrogen or C 1-8 alkyl; and n is 0 or an integer from 1 to 8. The copolymers are prepared by copolymerizing in the presence of a compound of a transition metal of Groups IV to VIII and an aluminium compound of the formula AlR1X1X2.mZ, wherein R1 is hydrogen or a C 1-10 alkyl; each of X1 and X2, which can be the same or different, is hydrogen, halogen, a C 1-10 alkyl or a secondary amine; Z is a Lewis base; and m is 0 or an integer from 1 to 2. In the examples copolymers of ethylene, propylene and, as a termonomer, (2-norborn-5-enyl)-[31- pentadien (11,41) - yl] - methane, (2 - norborn-5- enyl) - [31 - pentadien (11,41) - yl - 21 - methyl]- methane, (2 - norborn - 5 - enyl) - [31 - pentadien (11,41) - yl - (21,41) - dimethyl] - methane, 111-(2 - norborn - 5 - enyl) - 311 - [31 - pentadien (11,41) - yl] - propane and (2 - norborn-5-enyl)- divinyl-methane are prepared using, as catalyst (C 2 H 5 ) 2 AlCl and V(Ac.Ac) 3 , VO(OButyl) 3 or VCl 4 .
