The present invention provides a method for applying a tin and titanium-containing coating to a substrate by contacting the substrate with a vaporous coating composition comprised of stannic chloride and titanium tetrachloride. In the method, the relative weight ratio of stannic chloride and titanium tetrachloride to be applied to the substrate is predetermined; the vaporization temperature necessary to result in a vapor admixture of stannic chloride and titanium tetrachloride wherein the stannic chloride and titanium tetrachloride are present in the desired weight ratio is determined; a liquid admixture of stannic chloride and titanium tetrachloride in which these components are present in a weight ratio substantially identical to that predetermined for application to the substrate is provided; the liquid admixture is contacted with a carrier gas to provide a vaporous coating composition which is comprised of the carrier gas, stannic chloride and titanium tetrachloride; the carrier gas is substantially maintained at the vaporization temperature determined above and is permitted to come to equilibrium with the liquid admixture during the contacting step; the vaporous coating composition is then contacted with a suitable substrate. The method of this invention is useful in the coating of various metal surfaces, plastic surfaces, glass, for example, glass bottles or other containers, tubing, rods, sheets, window glass, etc. The method of the present invention enables the concentration of the liquid admixture to be correlated to the vaporization temperature in order to avoid undesirable accumulation of one component with respect to the other, while maintaining each component in equilibrium.
|
